CURRICULUM FOR EARLY YEARS
Starville Early Years is a nursery from children from the ages of 3 months to 5 years. We operate a Montessori Method of teaching utilising its principles and resources designed to meet the peculiar needs of every child. The teaching method is child-centred and we aim to bring the best out in each child to fulfill his/her potentials both in academic and human terms.
The five Montessori curriculum areas are:
:: The Practical Life exercises: These are the foundation of the Montessori system. They are elementary movement and preliminary activities; such as sweeping, transferring, pouring, care of self, care of environment, fine and social skills, These exercises aim to bridge the gap between home and school and aid the child in that transition.
:: Sensorial education: Children learn through their senses. This is why it is important to invest in the holistic development of the child. The child touches, feels, listens, holds, and thus sharpens their senses. Sensorial education creates order and clarity in the mind of the child and reinforces mathematical concepts. Sensorial materials are what Maria Montessori called “keys to the Universe.” Sensorial materials help to develop the five core senses of the child: chromatic (sense of colour), hearing, smell, touch, and taste.
:: Language: With the Montessori method of teaching, basic writing, reading, listening and speaking skills are developed. The phonic method of learning to read alphabets produces understanding because a child first learns the phonic sound of each letter. With the help of sensorial materials, the child automatically knows how to hold the pencil.
:: Mathematics: Montessori stipulates that mathematical concepts be taught from the basic in the simplest forms. This way, the child can internalise a learning experience. Lessons will be built from basics and gradually progress to the more complex. Maria Montessori believed in working systematically from the concrete to the abstract, in order for the child to gain understanding and master each operation of addition, multiplication, subtraction, and division. The materials used to teach Mathematics in any Montessori environment allow the child to have a sensorial experience, allowing him to store concepts that enable such child deal with mathematical concepts that are abstract in nature with profound understanding. More importantly, the child learns at his own space with care. He masters an activity, internalizes the learning experience, and is able to apply it when required.
:: Cultural Subjects (geography, botany, zoology, history, science, music, and art.): Great emphasis is placed on this area as it is the area in which cultural education takes place. When teaching science, History, and Geography, we start with the larger aspects, the universe, major land and water forms or an overview of the history of the world. Emphasis is obviously placed on one’s own region. Montessori materials help the child to develop personality, adapt to his culture and become an independent and useful member of the society.
